OCC bank examiners gain unparalleled exposure to the financial services industry and are respected advisors to the institutions they regulate. They engage with all levels of bank management and participate in a broad range of analytical and bank supervisory activities conducted both onsite at banks and within Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) offices.

Using a risk-based examination approach, examiners assess a bank’s overall condition and identify potential problems. Through robust continuing education and career development, examiners continually expand their technical expertise and refine the interpersonal skills essential for success in a rapidly evolving financial environment.

While some experienced examiners specialize in specific areas, many serve as generalists, focusing on the overall safety and soundness of the banks they examine. Bank examiners may be assigned to community, midsize, or large banks.

Travel

Midsize and Community Bank Examiners

Midsize and community bank examiners travel frequently – typically Monday through Friday – to conduct onsite examinations. Weekend travel is rare.

  • The type and frequency of travel depend on the location of your assigned office. Some offices require more travel to rural areas, while others focus on metropolitan regions.
  • View estimated overnight travel percentages by office location for additional detail.
  • The OCC offers transportation benefits, including:
    • Mileage reimbursement
    • Public transit subsidies (when commuting to a bank)
    • Full coverage of air and train fees, as applicable
  • When travelling more than 50 miles from your residence, you are generally eligible for lodging expenses (hotel, motel, or bed & breakfast) and a pre-established per diem to cover meals and incidental expenses.

Large Bank Examiners

Large bank examiners are generally based full-time at the main office of the institution to which they are assigned. However, travel is occasionally required depending upon their respective specialty areas.

  • Travel may include visiting other bank offices where business is conducted or supporting examination teams at different locations.
  • On average, large bank examiners can expect to travel up to 30% of the time, depending on their assignment and office location.
